Martial Arts can be fun and a great way to train and get in shape. For centuries people have been battling (physically and verbally) as to which style of martial arts is the best. There are literally hundreds of different styles being taught today. The original styles are Kung Fu, Karate, Judo, Aikido, Tae-kwon-do, Budokan, Ninjitsu, Juijitsu. Our Culture, thanks to Infomercials and high-glamour clubs, are teaching high-paced, watered-down, martial arts techniques as a workout regimen.

I have several friends who are involved in these Kick-boxing exercise classes and believe they can "kick-butt" if the time comes to defending themselves or their families. I say to them, "You know just enough about martial arts to get yourselves killed!" They possess the self confidence and know basic blocks and kicks, but unless you have sparred and trained in some aspect of "controlled contact" fighting, you will end up in a worse situation than when you started.

Here are 4 Practical Steps to protecting yourself from an Attacker:

1. If there is a way out, take it! Don't try to be brave! No matter how angry and insulted you are by this drunk or drugged-up enemy, don't take matters into your own hand. Remember the highest prized-possession is at stake... your life. If you can talk your enemy down- then do so. The other alternative is to run the other way.

2. If your attacker proceeds to get in your face. First, verbally tell him to back away. Second, if he proceeds to yell and curse you down, tell him to move back, because he is threating you and making you feel uncomfortable. Finally, if he does not back down, you have every right to push, not punch or kick, but push him away and tell him that you don't want any problems. Then quickly get away.

3. If your attacker proceeds to grab you. By this time, the attacker has violated your space and has crossed-over your safety-zone. If you cannot peel his hands off of you. You can easily do a swift "punt kick" or "front snap kick" to the attacker's groin to get away. This is not an opportunity to perform your kata set on your opponent. The idea is to defend yourself and get away.

4. If your attacker is going to punch you. This is the best time to get into your "fighter's stance" hands up to protect your face and stand sideways to make sure your vital points are less accessible(chest, abdomin, and groin). Defend yourself with your blocks and immediately run away. If you are cornered and have no other option but to fight back, then do so...

Through the years, missing the mark, martial arts has turned in to an agressive "attack first, before being attacked" mentality. Martial arts used to be laced with humility. It was a secret training ritual and as a last resort, when your or your family's lives were at stake, then you would defend yourself. Remember to be diligent and humble on your road to mastering martial arts.
